The BC Securities Commission (BCSC) regulates more than 65 per cent of the reporting mining issuers in Canada. Mining and mineral exploration companies in Canada must follow specific guidelines for disclosure, designed to improve the accuracy and integrity of the information they provide. National Instrument 43-101, Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, governs a company's public disclosure of scientific and technical information about its mineral projects. Combatting climate change is the biggest global challenge of our time, and Canada’s mining industry is being called upon like never before to provide the materials essential to the energy transition.
Minerals and metals are mined in Canada with strong commitments to ESG, including through made-in-Canada standards like Towards Sustainable Mining. We have one of the cleanest grids in the world. We can and should be a leading supplier of these critical materials to meet global demand. To do this, we need to build more Canadian mines, smelters and refineries to feed the needs of battery plants, the EV value chain and many other sectors.
Canada needs to attract investment into the mining sector, or our position in the race for advanced technology manufacturing — and the benefits that flow from that — will be significantly diminished. Recent federal budgets have helped set the stage for a rebound in mineral and metal exploration and development, but there is more work to do, including improving the timelines for regulatory approvals.
Time is of the essence and Canada must come to the table if our goals to be the global mining supplier of choice are to be realized.

About the Speaker
Pierre Gratton was appointed President and CEO of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) in 2011. His decades of experience in Canada's mining sector, exemplified through his current role and his previous position as President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia, has made him one of the leading voices in the industry. Based in Ottawa, MAC is the national organization for the Canadian mining industry and its members are engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting, semi-fabrication and supply.
Mr. Gratton was instrumental in the development of Towards Sustainable Mining® (TSM), MAC's flagship program that is gaining international recognition and adoption. TSM focuses on enabling mining companies to meet society's needs for minerals, metals and energy products in the most socially, economically and environmentally responsible ways. Since its inception in 2004, TSM is now used in nine countries on six different continents.
Mr. Gratton is First Vice-President of the Interamerican Mining Society (SIM – Sociedad Interamericana de Mineria), Chair of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and the Co-chair of the Green Mining Initiative Advisory Committee. He also serves as a Trustee of the Arctic Inspiration Prize and is on the Board of Ottawa's Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra.
