Metro Vancouver - Together We Make Our Region Strong

Mayor George Harvie

Our region attracts about 35,000 people every year. While this growth brings enviable opportunities, it also has its challenges — from affordability to traffic congestion and pressure on our agricultural and industrial lands. And while not confined to the region, the past several years have brought extraordinary economic, political, environmental, and social challenges.

As the regional body responsible for providing critical services to nearly 2.8 million residents — more than half the population of B.C. — Metro Vancouver represents 61 per cent of the province’s GDP and 1.5 million jobs. To maintain a prosperous and livable region, it is crucial that Metro Vancouver strengthen the region’s vital infrastructure in the face of more extreme weather events and continue to take bold climate action, all while ensuring affordable delivery of essential services such as drinking water, liquid waste treatment, solid waste management, and the provision of affordable housing. Metro Vancouver also supports the region’s livability through air quality regulation and monitoring, regional planning, and regional parks.

Join Metro Vancouver Board Chair George V. Harvie for his inaugural address to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. In his remarks, Harvie will outline Metro Vancouver’s ambitious plans for delivering more than $7 billion in capital infrastructure projects over the next five years, the critical role of Metro 2050 — the regional federation’s vision for managing growth, and the transformative impacts of key initiatives like the Climate 2050 strategy and Metro Vancouver Housing 10-Year Plan. Harvie will also share how Invest Vancouver, as the region’s economic development leadership service, is positioning our regional economy for success in the face of rapid change and global challenges.
