VANCOUVER, B.C.— The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade welcomes the news that Vancouver City Council has passed a motion that will provide funding for additional police officers and nurses to address public safety challenges in the city.

“We are very pleased to see swift action to address the public safety concerns shared by members of the public and business owners alike,” said Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. “This investment represents a welcome response to the increase in vandalism and violent attacks we have experienced in the last two years, which has negatively affected both our community and our reputation as a safe, welcoming city.”

A survey of members of the public and the business community ahead of the 2022 municipal elections found crime/public safety were among the top priorities.

“Collaboration between the city, the VPD, and Vancouver Coastal Health, improves the overall well-being of our community, through programs like Car 87, which pairs law enforcement with mental health workers. On Sunday, the provincial government signaled their willingness to work together on public safety and, moving forward, this kind of coordination across all levels of government will be required to coordinate solutions in our city, including increased mental illness and addiction supports, access to treatment, more housing options, and keeping repeat offenders off our streets,” Anderson concluded.
