News release - The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade Relieved to Finally Welcome Ride Hailing to the Region
For Immediate Release
Jan. 23, 2020
VANCOUVER, B.C.— The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade (the Board) is thrilled to hear that ridesharing has been approved to operate in the Lower Mainland and Whistler.
Since 2016, the Board has advocated for the modernization of the traditional taxi industry and encouraged steps to bring ridesharing to British Columbia. Today, the province’s Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) approved two ride hailing companies, Lyft Canada Inc. and Uber Canada Inc., to operate in the Lower Mainland and Whistler.
“We are very pleased with today’s announcement that ride hailing is finally coming to Greater Vancouver,” said Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. “There is overwhelming support for ride hailing among our Members, and we are thrilled that the day has finally arrived. Not only will it help residents, it bolsters our reputation as an international travel destination.”
The introduction of ridesharing will have important safety, efficiency, and environmental implications. As a complement to the public transportation system, ridesharing services will increase transportation options and enhance the connectivity and accessibility of our region.
“As a next step, our hope is that municipalities quickly develop a regional business licence to avoid unnecessary red tape and costly fees so that drivers can finally hit the road,” said Anderson.
The Board has been a leading voice in the public conversation on ridesharing and is a proud founding member of the Ridesharing Now coalition, formed in February 2018.
