GVBOT Responds to Step 3 of provincial reopening

June 30, 2021

VANCOUVER, B.C. — More than 15 months into the global pandemic, the provincial government has announced that as of July 1, we will be moving to Step 3 of the B.C. Restart Plan. This phase will see a significant number of restrictions being lifted including the limits on restaurants, personal gatherings, together with an increase in the capacity limits for organized gatherings. Businesses will also be transitioning to Communicable Disease Prevention and masks will no longer be required but instead will be recommended.

“It is a testament to our leaders in public health, across government, and indeed all British Columbians that we are at a place in our pandemic response that we can move to Step 3. Our public health response and world leading vaccination program is clearly working, and we can truly see brighter days ahead for our business community. This will be especially important for businesses like restaurants and larger venues, which have had limited capacity or no ability to functionally operate for a long time,” said Bridgitte Anderson.

There is a note of caution in today’s news. Businesses and customers have benefitted from certainty of requirements and that increased confidence. Following today’s news, businesses will be working overtime and there will be a lot of adjustments and changes to what the in-store experience looks and feels like. It will likely look different across similar businesses and some venues. Businesses, employees, and some British Columbians may also feel reticent about masks becoming recommended.

“We urge consumers and employers to continue to do what you’ve been doing. Listen and consult your employees and customers about the path forward as you open up. For British Columbians, be kind and patient, and if you are unsure about measures in place, ask how they are following guidance from the Public Health Officer and WorkSafeBC. Local businesses have been waiting for the opportunity to better serve the community and they need our support as we navigate through this next phase together,” concluded Anderson.
