GVBOT responds to proposed B.C. sick leave legislation
For Immediate Release
May 11, 2021
VANCOUVER, B.C. —The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade has been working with the business community and provincial government since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, calling on the federal government to implement a national sick leave program to address the ongoing public health crisis. Last year, we were pleased when the federal government announced their program but recognize there are gaps in the coverage, especially in the processing timelines.
"By extending access to pandemic-related sick leave, this proposed legislation will help British Columbians by filling the gaps in the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, while recognizing the extraordinary challenges faced by small and medium sized businesses," said Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade. "Workers must be able to protect themselves and their community by staying home if they are required to self-isolate or waiting for COVID-19 test results, without worrying about the financial implications."
"We are in the midst of a global public health crisis and so it is appropriate that the program is funded by the government. Just as this program addresses the need to provide workers seamless reimbursement, it is also critical that the administration of the process provides small businesses quick reimbursement. Employers continue to show resilience in addressing the unprecedented challenges brought on by the global pandemic and we need to ensure that consultations on permanent programs are robust."
