VANCOUVER, B.C — The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade President and CEO, Bridgitte Anderson, has issued a statement in response to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) decision regarding any potential work stoppage related to Canada’s rail system.

“Today’s CIRB ruling enables a full work stoppage on our rail system, which would leave Canadians with fewer access to goods and products, driving up prices, and worsening the affordability crisis. The livelihood of millions of workers will be put in jeopardy as our national economy grinds to a halt.

“Despite this disappointing decision, it is heartening to see that the Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and the union representing the country's rail workers have agreed to restart negotiations on a new labour deal. We sincerely hope that new contracts can be reached during the 13-day cooling-off period ordered by the tribunal.

“From coast to coast, our railway system is the lifeblood of our economy, transporting $380 billion worth of goods annually – over $1 billion a day – and accounts for half of the country’s exports.

“Failing an agreement at the negotiation table we call on the Government of Canada to be on standby to use every tool in their toolkit to ensure that our rail system is back up and running as soon as possible to ensure that Canadians do not suffer at the hands of the few.”
