GVBOT expresses concerns over deferred logging plan
November 2, 2021, VANCOUVER, B.C. — Greater Vancouver Board of Trade President and CEO Bridgitte Anderson has issued a statement regarding the Provincial Government’s plan to defer logging on 2.6 million hectares of forests in B.C.
“We are concerned about the impact this announcement will have for thousands of hard-working families. Forestry is a key source of employment and economic activity across the province. It provides good-paying jobs and net revenue for government that helps pay for services we rely on like health care.
While there are many forestry-dependent communities across B.C., the sector is also a major employer in urban areas, including Greater Vancouver. It is estimated that close to half the employees in the forest industry work in Metro Vancouver. The impact of this decision will be felt across the province. It also comes at a very trying time, just as we are beginning to recover from the impact of the pandemic on our economy.
Old-growth forests are very important to our province. We are world leaders in preserving our forests as well as ensuring sustainable management of our working forests. We encourage the government to continue to dialogue with all affected, including Indigenous Nations and industry, on the path forward.”
