VANCOUVER, B.C. — This afternoon it was announced that British Columbians have resoundingly voted in favour of maintaining our province’s first-past-the-post electoral system.

The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade welcomes today’s news, given that we believe our current electoral system provides more stability and government accountability than a proportional representation voting system.

“For decades, our province has enjoyed certainty, stability, and governments held accountable for their decisions. We believe today’s decision will help British Columbia maintain this enviable position for years to come,” said Hon. Iain Black, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

“Under a first-past-the-post electoral system, voters are empowered to hold individual MLAs and political parties accountable for their decisions. This direct line of transparent accountability is crucial when it comes time for British Columbians to cast their ballots.”

In total, 61 per cent of British Columbians voted in favour of maintaining the current electoral system.
