Border reopening plan welcome news for B.C. business
For Immediate Release
July 19, 2021
VANCOUVER, B.C. — Today, the Federal Government announced a two-step process for the easing of border restrictions, first for the U.S. and then for all fully vaccinated international travellers. The changes to the U.S. border will come into effect for U. S travellers on August 9th and individuals from other countries will be welcomed as of September 7th. In response, the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade President and CEO, Bridgitte Anderson, released the following statement:
"For some time, we have been calling for a science-based plan to reopen our border and so today's announcement is very welcome news. With the clarity provided today, businesses can plan to resume travel, families can be reunited, and vaccinated travellers can return to support local jobs all while keeping British Columbians safe.
We encourage the Federal Government to continue to work with the United States, the European Union and the many international bodies working to define the new rules and required documentation for travel to ensure a coordinated and reciprocal treatment for Canadians around the world.
The scars of the pandemic will run deep, as the absence of international travellers during the pandemic came at a cost of almost $10 billion to Vancouver alone. When you add Toronto and Montreal, the lost economic impact is $2.24 billion a month. While the road to recovery remains long, Greater Vancouver is once again looking forward to welcoming international travellers and regaining its role as a global city and a hub for business, conventions, and sustainable tourism. We eagerly await the day when we can again welcome the world by air, land, and sea.
The announcement today is only possible because our domestic vaccination rates are among the best in the world, but we can't afford to lose momentum. The message is clear, if you want to travel, get vaccinated, and so we encourage all Canadians to book their first or second shot as soon as possible so we can hasten a safe return to normal."
