GVBOT Statement on Canada – USA Trade Negotiations

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s President and CEO Bridgitte Anderson issued the following statement in response to the breakdown and escalation of trade negotiations between Canada and the United States:
“The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade is deeply concerned about the collapse of the trade talks and the impact of tariffs, which raise costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border. This latest round of tariffs imposed by the United States unfairly targets many British Columbia businesses and threatens jobs, investment and economic growth throughout our province. As Canada activates its response, it should do so strategically and in close consultation with affected industries to avoid unnecessary harm to Canadian businesses and consumers.
The best outcome for both Canada and the United States is a durable agreement that provides certainty for businesses, workers and investors. We continue to support efforts to keep the lines of communication open and achieve a fair negotiated solution.
At the same time, this is a reminder that Canada cannot afford to wait. Governments must move urgently to reduce internal trade barriers, build trade-enabling infrastructure, advance major resource and industrial projects, diversify export markets, and do everything they can to strengthen Canada's competitiveness.”
