GVBOT responds to Donald Trump tariff announcement

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s President and CEO, Bridgitte Anderson, made the following statement:

The United States is British Columbia’s most important trading partner, accounting for 54% of our province’s commodity exports in 2023. This robust partnership supports tens of thousands of jobs, fuels economic growth, and bolsters the prosperity of communities on both sides of the border.

The announcement by President-Elect Donald Trump is very concerning and needs to be taken seriously. Any disruptions or meaningful changes to tariffs would have significant consequences for businesses, workers, and families across British Columbia and Canada.

It is imperative that we engage constructively with our U.S. counterparts to advance our collective interests. Stemming the flow of drugs like fentanyl is a shared priority as is the integrity of our shared borders.

British Columbia has been built on a foundation of free trade. It will continue to be part of who we are far into the future. We plan to work collaboratively with our U.S.A counterparts in Cascadia and beyond to advance our interests.

This should act as a wake-up call to all levels of government that a new Team Canada’ approach is required. We need to be laser focused on growing the economy and remaining a competitive jurisdiction.

Sample of B.C.’s Top Exports to the U.S.A

  • Machinery and Equipment - Electrical/Electronic/Communication
  • Agricultural Products
  • Minerials and Metals
