Nearly 40 years ago, over 22 million visitors descended upon Vancouver for Expo 86, the second largest event in B.C.’s history, to explore the future of transportation by land, air, and water. Although innovative at the time, no one could have imagined how Vancouver would look in 2023.

Fast forward 25 years from today, the population of Greater Vancouver is predicted to increase to 3.8 million people, an increase of 1 million. Cities everywhere are facing new realities such as climate change, global pandemics, and energy transitions. It is time for communities to consider how they will build forward-thinking, sustainable, resilient infrastructure and networks that will serve the needs of our rapidly changing world.

What are the scalable, innovative, and clean solutions that industry and government can collaborate on to ensure Metro Vancouver citizens can move sustainably and efficiently between work, home, and play?
How can Metro Vancouver build upon its award-winning transportation infrastructure as we become a city of 4 million residents, and what is our role in the Cascadia Mega Region of 10 million?

Technology and Climate Change: Moving Forward Sustainably

There is no question that B.C. companies and the government are responding to the call to act on climate, spurring rapid innovation of cleaner technologies that contribute to sustainable transportation. Despite the common goal and an abundance of startups, the path to commercialization and scaling up continues to be the biggest challenge.

This expert panel will discuss innovative made-in-B.C. transportation solutions and the opportunities that exist for government and industry to scale up, accelerate adoption and export these solutions.

As the Metro Vancouver region and nearby suburbs face rapidly expanding populations, housing affordability challenges, new patterns of movement, congestion and accessibility – what is the cost of this congestion and how can industry and municipal governments work together to keep up with the pace of growth? What are the investment opportunities?

This panel will be a case study of other jurisdictions that are having similar conversations, offering innovative ideas and opportunities for mobility in the future.
