Volunteer with Fresh Roots: Great Big Helps
Are you looking for a great way to meet fellow Members of the Company of Young Professionals, give back to the community, and get your hands a little dirty?
The Company of Young Professionals is partnering with Fresh Roots to help improve and harvest the Vancouver Technical Secondary’s Schoolyard Market Garden. These gardens facilitate outdoor experiential learning with teachers and students. All the food grown is sold back into the school community through the cafeteria, food-access programs, and markets.
Expect to work on different projects around the farm and get a little dirty. Fresh Roots will supply all the necessary tools, gloves, and a light lunch featuring farm produce.
Fresh Roots helps schools and school districts across Greater Vancouver grow community through growing food. They work with a variety of partners and clients, utilizing school gardens to provide opportunities for inquiry-based and cross-curricular learning, volunteering, leadership development, and job skills training, animating school communities across our region.

What to wear:
We'll be outside, rain or shine. Please dress for the weather. We recommend layers you can take off as you warm up. If it's raining, rain pants are really helpful. Hats and sunscreen are recommended, even if it doesn't look that sunny. Everyone must wear sturdy shoes. You will be getting dirty, so plan accordingly!
What to bring:
Bring a water bottle, a snack, a bowl and utensils for lunch, your favorite gardening gloves or tools (optional), and something tasty to share (also optional). Please don't forget your enthusiasm!
Accessibility:
This is a working schoolyard farm! You can expect to be moving through the sometimes narrow paths and uneven surfaces you’d expect to find between garden beds. Our farm beds are in-ground, so most of the work is at ground level. Bathrooms are located in the park next door, about a five-minute walk from the farm site.
