About the Speaker
The Honourable John McCallum was appointed Ambassador of Canada to the People's Republic of China on March 18, 2017. Prior to his appointment, McCallum served as the Member of Parliament for Markham (subsequently Markham-Unionville, Markham-Thornhill) from 2000 to 2017.
During his time in government, McCallum held six ministerial portfolios, including National Defence and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. He led an initiative to welcome 40,000+ Syrian refugees to Canada (2015-16) and nominated Nelson Mandela as honorary citizen (2001).
