Rod Thomas

Mineral exploration and development play a significant role in both B.C. and the Canadian economy. Mr. Thomas will outline how Canada's rich natural resource endowment remains a pillar of the country's economic engine, and why maintaining the vibrancy of the sector will continue ensure economic growth, jobs and fiscal sustainability for Canada and Canadians in some of the most remote and rural parts of this great country.

Historically, Canada has been the global centre for mineral industry capital raising, ranking as the top jurisdiction in the world when it comes to raising mining equity finance however, uncertainty in the global economy has led to significant capital-raising challenges for juniors. In 2013, the total number of financings on the TSX Venture Exchange was one of the lowest since 1999 indicated a protracted and continued downturn. The volume and level of financings has indicated that the sector is on the precipice of a major structural shift.

Mr. Thomas will conclude his remarks with a discussion about the role of industry, government and community stakeholders in terms of ensuring a strong and vibrant Canadian mineral industry.
