Everything you need to know about the Canada/U.S. tariffs

Latest Updates
The Canada-U.S. trade environment continues to change. Businesses engaged in cross-border trade should confirm applicable customs, import, export, and regulatory requirements through official government sources prior to shipment, as requirements are subject to change.

President Trump signed five proclamations on Sept 8, 2026. Two adjust the scope of existing 50% additional duties on certain Canadian products in alcohol and autos (some remain subject, some removed), effective Sept 15. Three ban imports of specified Canadian products previously under those duties (autos, dairy, alcohol), effective Sept 29.
The measures affect products across numerous sectors, including dairy, alcohol, electronics, building materials, apparel, and agricultural goods. Notably, the proposed tariffs apply to many goods that currently qualify for preferential treatment under CUSMA, with no stated expiry date.
Following the U.S. decision to impose a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods, the Government of Canada has announced that it will apply counter-tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on select U.S. products, effective September 8. The federal government has also introduced a $7.5 billion support package for affected Canadian workers and businesses.
